New ENeRG Position Paper on Integrated and Sustainable Energy Uses of the Underground

Friday, 19 September, 2014

The purpose of the new ENeRG Position Paper is to provide guidance on new research needed for integrated and sustainable use of the underground in relation to natural gas (shale gas, coalbed methane, gas hydrates), shale oil (kerogen oil), geothermal energy, CO2 capture and storage (CCS), CO2 capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), nuclear energy and waste disposal, and energy storage, while preserving groundwater resources at the same time. Detailed exploration of the underground structures, properties of the reservoir and sealing rocks, 3D models of the studied underground space, estimation of its production and/or storage capacity, as well as an integrated subsurface atlas are needed to take decisions about the most economic, multiple or integrated use of the underground.
